Quilted Redwood Stand
Quilted Redwood Stand
Here’s a stand with some style! This round stand for 6 canes or sticks is made out of several woods. The top is the highlight and the attention-grabber, its quilted old growth redwood from California. Quite special and also ancient, this piece of wood was salvage harvested from tree stumps that were cut over a hundred years ago. It’s possible this tree was alive and growing at the time of Jesus. The quilted figure is 3D looking waves that are highly chatoyant and play with light in a fun way. The post and bottom of the stand are an African hardwood called Sapele, a mahogany-like wood but heavier, also a chatoyant wood. In the center of the top is a medallion that has been made by lathe Artist Jon Sauer on his unique “Holtsfitzle rose engine lathe” - something worth a google search when you think of it. The medallion is made using African blackwood with a 6 pointed central flower of amboyna burl that points to each of the stand’s holes. The bottom recesses are lined with leather for a nice look and feel. Finally, its hand rubbed with natural linseed oil that penetrates, seals, and protects the wood; it has a very soft feel and luster look.
