Zebra and Gidgee Sickle Cane
Zebra and Gidgee Sickle Cane
This modern sickle shaped cane is hand crafted using a very special, figured wood from Australia called Gidgee, and my best quality Zebrawood from Africa. The center of the laminated handle and the shaft are "ringed" gidgee, the Australian verbiage for curl figure, and it has a pleasant chatoyance. Gidgee wood is basically tied with Genuine Lignum (Guayacan) for the densest wood in the world. The outsides of the handle are pomelle figured zebrawood, also with a pleasant chatoyance, and gorgeous grain. The laminated handle also has thin layers of walnut, the divider is the same make-up as the handle with extra layers of walnut. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
The last image is of a Gidgee (Acacia Cambagei) tree. It's a small little tree that grows in a semi-arid region of the Australian outback. Its a privilege to offer this species in my cane work, the shafts of the canes being the rarest and hardest to source from such a stunted species.
