Jade and Gidgee Cane
Jade and Gidgee Cane
Here is one of my solid jade handled canes, a really special offering and something totally unique to my work. Jade is world renowned and coveted, a semi-precious stone with transparent qualities, typically in some shade of green. Jade is legendary for its toughness and durability, in ancient times some cultures used jade for tools such as axes and knives. But jade is also highly prized, Chinese culture considered jade more precious than gold. Today jade carvings from antiquity can be found in museums around the world. The wood on this cane is very special, its highly figured gidgee wood from Australia. Gidgee is an arid region acacia species that's little more than a large shrub and grows very slowly. Its special to offer a shaft-length piece of this precious wood, but exponentially more to offer it with such exquisite curl figure from top to bottom. Gidgee is almost tied for the densest wood in the world and it has lovely golden chatoyance. A heavy cane. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
It is a long and painstaking process to take a solid block of jade and make it into one of my full-size cane handles. I do so completely by hand and it takes many hours of hand grinding. In the summer of 2024 I made 3 jade handles, this being one of them. In 2023 I made 4 jade handled canes, they were my first. The stone feels smooth in hand and cold at first, warming as its held.
