Blackwood Bird Wing Cane
Blackwood Bird Wing Cane
This heirloom quality bird wing cane is made exclusively from African Blackwood. This wood is the densest and darkest member of the rosewood family of species. African blackwood is very dark like ebony, but not black; in fact African blackwood is chatoyant but you'll need a bright light or the sun to see this wood come alive. There is also some burl grain in the handle, some of the most intricate burl grain of any species with many tinny "eyes", super rare. The handle is one of my favorite designs, carved into the likeness of a bird's wing. Its very comfortable in-hand. The shaft is solid African blackwood with a curve to it, it sweeps back under the handle. The wood follows the natural curvature of the log I cut it from. The sweep is beautiful and adds to the look of the cane. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
This is a heavy cane. African blackwood is super dense and heavy, since the shaft is also African blackwood this piece has respectable heft.
Very rare for me to offer African blackwood in shafts, this wood is usually only available in small pieces.
Last images are of the Blackwood tree (locals call it Mpingo), in natural habitat.
