Woolly Rhino Bone and Lignum Cane
Woolly Rhino Bone and Lignum Cane
A once in a life-time offering here, this cane is crafted using an extraordinary piece of natural history. The handle, in one of my modern shapes I call the “sickle”, is solid bone from the extinct woolly Rhino, an ancient megafauna species that roamed around Europe during the last ice age and went extinct over 10,000 years ago. The bone is specifically from the Woolly Rhino's skull, the forward most part near the nose, just forward of the animal's horns. It's extremely dense bone. Several years ago the bone was found buried in the Siberian permafrost, where it rested frozen and preserved in ice for possibly 100,000 years or more. Hard to find a cane handle with a more unique story and history.
The shaft wood is also very special, its the densest wood in the world, Guayacan (genuine lignum vitae). Guayacan is the densest of several related wood species that all carry the name "lignum vitae". genuine lignum is a very slow growing tree that has been harvested for its uniquely dense wood for centuries, today genuine lignum is endangered and highly protected. It's only very old material that was harvested long ago that can be found and used in my work today. Very special and rare, most material that’s still on the market is badly cracked and poor quality.
The shaft is curved on this cane, it gently arches back beneath the handle where it reaches the floor. This is the natural shape of the wood, but it improves the feel and balance of the cane.
The divider is ancient bone, another piece of natural history to top off this cane! Its species is unknown, but it was found on the north sea floor and it is tens of thousands of years old as well. It is stacked with layers of lignum and brass.
A heavy cane, perfectly functional, could be used daily but probably best for special occasions given how special it is. Total length measures 37 inches and can be shortened to fit.
