Woolly Rhino and Pietersite Cane

$8,000.00

A once in a life-time offering here, this cane is crafted using an extraordinary piece of natural history. The handle, in a comfortable, traditional handle shape, is solid bone from the extinct woolly Rhino, an ancient megafauna species that roamed around Europe during the last ice age and went extinct over 10,000 years ago. The bone is specifically from the Woolly Rhino's skull, the forward most part near the nose, just forward of the animal's horns. It's extremely dense bone. Several years ago the bone was found buried in the Siberian permafrost, where it rested frozen and preserved in ice for possibly 100,000 years or more. Hard to find a cane handle with a more unique story and history.

surrounding the handle are three pieces of the highest quality Namibian Pietersite stone, a highly sought after and rare material. Pietersite is best known for its array of deep colors and extremely chatoyant appearance. These stones have a really dynamic effect when moved around in light. This stone came from a vintage estate collection of a New York City jeweler, I acquired the collection several years ago and it had been in storage since the 1980's.

The wood is also very special, its tight curl figured yellow box wood from Australia. Its figure is top-grade with mesmerizing 3D looking grain from top to bottom. It is a dense wood as well. The shaft gently arches backwards so that it contacts the floor underneath the arch of the handle.

This cane could be used daily. Total length measures 38 inches and can be shortened to fit.
