"Snail's Pace"
"Snail's Pace"
A collection of special materials came together to make this unique pistol grip style cane. The handle is ancient Red Gum wood that spend several thousand years buried in a bog slowly being stained darker and darker by mineral exposure but deprived of oxygen thus preventing decay. It's highly figured, some of the most figured ancient material I've ever acquired. It's 3D curl figure its chatoyant and when enough light is present offers wonderful interest and beauty.
The nearly white parts of the handle are muskox horn from Alaska. Under close inspection it has interesting patterns. The end of the handle is decorated with a another ancient material, fossilized fresh water snails. The species is "Elimia tenera" and its from Wyoming and dates back to about 50 million years ago. The stone is from a location that represents a mass extinction event that killed off and buried millions of snails at one time.
Finally, the shaft, not to be overlooked. It's figured "sea ebony" from Vietnam, a very rare species, and its filled with interesting grain from top to bottom. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
