Rosewood and Mammoth Cane

$1,800.00

An exquisite, handmade cane, this piece has a special handle made out of micro curl figured Siamese rosewood with a gradient of different colors. Siamese rosewood is extremely rare, and its one of the most coveted woods in the world, particularly in China. It’s a very chatoyant wood and the curl figure accentuates the effect. Under light the curls dance back and forth as the cane is moved. There are even more curls than most of the still images capture, its completely covered with them! These are probably the tightest, and finest little curls I’ve ever seen in wood - its truly remarkable. This is once in a lifetime wood, my “top of the top shelf” material.

Moving down into the divider is a remarkable piece of a natural history, a piece of tusk from the extinct woolly mammoth! Its at least 10,000 years old which is when the mammoth went extinct, but its likely considerably older. The tusk was found in the Alaskan permafrost several years ago near Fairbanks at an operating gold mine, the tusk was excavated during mining operations - they found gold of a white variety! I had the opportunity to buy the entire tusk, which was flawless grade “A” material, perfectly preserved in the ice. Most mammoth tusks found are not grade A. The only issue was that the mine had broken the tusk in half during excavation, which is why it never became a display piece. The ivory’s “schreger lines” are super well defined and nicely displayed on each side of the cane. Schreger lines are like a tusk’s growth rings, and its also how the animal species can be positively identified as woolly mammoth.

Finally the shaft, a stunning piece of Mexican cocobolo wood, one of the most attractive and desirable woods in the world. Cocobolo is probably the rosewood with the greatest variety in its appearance depending on how and where the tree grew. The best Cocobolo has rich red color and black lines like this example. A great daily use cane, cane weight is medium towards the heavier end. Very durable woods. Could be used comfortably by almost anyway. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
