This ancient cane has a Ukrainian Bog Oak handle and a shaft of quilted maple with mammoth tusk in the divider. The ancient bog oak wood is approximately 5,000 years old! Wood like this is called "sinker" wood. An oak tree lived a typical life span but when it died and fell it was covered in peat moss or fell into a bog, both of which create an oxygen deprived environment that perfectly preserved the wood. But the oak does absorb minerals from its surroundings and the result after thousands of years is a dark color. This bog oak is a dark warm grey. The shaft is light, bright, and extremely chatoyant even in low light - very beautiful wood.

The mammoth ivory divider has a little story, to begin its tusk from the woolly mammoth, which went extinct around 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. But this little piece of mammoth tusk was NOT found in the icy permafrost, as all of my other piece have been. It was found during an areological excavation in western Turkey during the 1970’s. afterwards It was held in keepsake for decades until its owner decided to generously give several small mammoth tusk pieces to me to use in my work after ordering one of my canes. In honor of this generosity this cane’s price doesn’t reflect its presence - a gift passed on.

A good daily use cane, medium weight cane, towards the lighter end, could be used by anyone. Total length measures 38" and can be shortened to fit.
